Three Elements to a Strong Podcast

Finding a good podcast is like searching for the right book to read or binge watching your favorite television show. Once you start it, you’re hooked and will stay there to the climatic end. And now, more than ever you can find just about any type of podcast addressing a plethora of topics too. I personally like some of the daily news podcasts and the docuseries style. I think the New York Times’ Daily podcast and the suspense-filled Serial podcasts have really set the bar high in this emerging form of communication on how to create a successful, compelling and entertaining podcast.

There are many ways to do it—but best believe, your most successful podcasts have three essential key components they follow that helps them produce a great podcast.

·      A central idea/theme – Having a theme or focus for your podcast gives listeners an idea of what the podcast is about and lets them know what they can expect. Ways to do that include outlining the show, its format and its potential for longevity.

·      Targeted audience – Who are you speaking to?  It’s impossible to reach everyone; so, narrowing your core audience, including demographic helps you develop a key marketing strategy. Without a targeted audience your podcast, along with its message can fall flat.

·      Show structure/regularity – Podcasting is like a television show, knowing when and where to find it is key to success. Making sure that there are episodes that provide insight, entertainment and information to listeners is important.

Once you’ve given thought to your theme, who you’re speaking to, what you’re speaking about and how often, you will find yourself well on your way to creating an audio masterpiece!
